Llantwit
Major Victorian Fair 2007 Roundup
The sun was shining, the
streets were thronging with people and the cash tills were ringing so all in
all the feeling is everyone had a very successful day.
The Llantwit Major Chamber
itself raised over £500.00 for the Allys 2 Africa fund with the help of
Dragon Bouncy Castles, Cardiff and some magnificent volunteers, including
pupils from Llantwit Comprehensive, who manned the inflatables.
Councillor Russell Downes has pledged to take the total to £750.00
from his Charity account with monies collected during his reign as Mayor and
the fundraisers are absolutely delighted.
Janet and her team wish to
thank many people for joining with them to make the day so enjoyable.
The Mayor, Councillor Robert
Hutchinson and Town Cryer, Dave Wilson for opening the Fair at 10.00 am.
The judges, Vale Councillor
Gwyn John and Emma Smith,Town Manager, for their stirling work judging of the
Best Dressed Shop Windows, First Prize Travelcare, Second Prize, Red Cross and
the Best Dressed Stalls, First Prize Lifelong Learning and Second Prize
Llantwit Twinning Association.
Assistant
Head Teacher, Debra Thomas, standing in for the headmaster Vince Brown called
away to rescue his wife from the mud of Glastonbury, who masterfully refereed
the Tug O, War. The Victorian
Fair Inaugural Cup was won by the Point Break Surfers
The South Wales Police and
the First Responders and St Johns Ambulance who worked very hard keeping an
eye out for problems and helping look after people in distress.
All the Traders and
Stallholders who dressed up and participated and people all over town who ran
a great variety of events, especially the NSPCC Ladiees on bikes who added to
the atmosphere greatly. Hopefully
next time the local charities and traders who didn’t join in on Saturday
will do so next time, making the event bigger and better!
The Town Hall staff for their
patience in dealing with all the queries from members of the public that
mistakenly thought the Town Hall were organising the Fair.
The Gem for being so
supportive it was very much appreciated.
There were a few hitches and
we wholeheartedly apologises to anyone from out of town who had difficulty
parking. On Thursday the Town Council had kindly granted permission to
use the Sports Field but after all the rain Friday and Saturday Morning it was
decided that not wanting the Victorian Fair to be the cause of any damage to
the field it would not be used.
There were also some problems
with people pulling out stalls at the last minute and some offers of help
failed to materialise but all in all for their first Victorian Fair everybody
involved was really delighted at how it all went and felt they learnt a lot
for the future.
It has been muted that it
should all happen again next year and we would welcome any views on the
subject so please use link below.
